Many small business owners are time-challenged and struggle to manage their sites on a daily basis. What appears one overwhelming task is actually a number of small tasks put together in the maintenance of a website, and therein lies the problem. There is always so much to do and so little time…

The complication of maintaining a small business website can be simplified by following few key web management techniques. This article gives you 10 simple tips to managing a website successfully. Read on to understand the simple rules that lead to better website performance:

Content is King!

There is more to content than just communication of an idea. Grammar and style are two primers that should be maintained throughout your website. Yes, content has to be simple and understandable by your readers. No, it does not have to be language used right out of a bar conversation. You need to understand: when people visit your site, they are primarily looking for quality information. More importantly, they are expecting professional writing and authoritative communication of ideas.

Search engines scan content, almost ignoring SEO factors like meta tags. The better the quality of relevant content on your site, the better your chances of scoring with the search engines.

Content writing follows a simple rule: Quality and Information above all! Period. When you put content on your site, ask yourself if it is:

Relevant to your business.

Gives information about your products.

Helps readers.

Conveys ideas simply within the parameters of professional writing, and

Is grammatically correct and uniform in style.

Keep it Fresh

Content that is older than 6 months to 1 year is clearly pushing your small business website to the gallows. Besides, assuming that you will update your site frequently, introducing products and modifying offers, it only makes sense that your content is updated in keeping with changes on your site.

Search engines track the age of your content and monitor how frequently your site changes. Also, you wouldn’t want to lose visitors because of stale content that is passe or irrelevant to your current products or offers, would you?

Add a Blog to your website. A Blog is a great platform where you can regularly add new content, even if your core content does not change. Updating fresh content frequently will see a surprising improvement in your site’s search engine ranking and visitor count.

Your Site’s Structure

A well-structured site has a couple of obvious advantages. First, search engines love it. Second, so does your visitors.

Imagine pages and paragraphs of information without headings, underlined texts, bulleted points. Now imagine content that is structured by category, topic, has catchy headlines and bulleted points for easy read. Takes no genius to realize which content visitors will read first.

Visitors to your site are almost always looking for highly specific information. Besides, web user attention span is less than 120 seconds on a web page. If your visitors do not find the information they are looking for, they will simply exit your page. Also, the nature of search engines requires them to break down while crawling your site. A well-structured and organized site is far better conceived than a hotch-potch of colorful pages with scribbles.

Search Engines are Smart

If you have set your heart on black-hat SEO techniques like keyword stuffing, link farms, etc, to sneek your website to the top of organic results, you are in for surprise. Search engines are only too aware of the backdoor SEO techniques you can use.

Play it fair; follow correct SEO techniques to climb to the top. Update content, use keywords (avoid keyword stuffing), link relevant, submit informative articles to article directories, maintain a blog, etc).

Relevant Linking

Imagine a pet site that links to a women’s cosmetic site. Does the idea sound ridiculous to you? Not if you believe in useless linking to achieve search engine ranks. Hoping you don’t, know that relevancy is everything when you are exchanging links with other sites. However, keep in mind that a link that is old is not much use to your site. Search engines track your backlinks and sites you are linking to. If you have an exclusive links page on your website, you are certainly inviting the search engines’ disfavor.

Link as much as you can. Only remember to spread it across your web pages. Example: Let us assume you have a pet site. You will probably have separate pages on pet food, pet exercise, pet health, pet care, pet grooming, pet training, etc. When you link from either of these pages, make sure you are linking to a relevant page of the other website. Your ‘pet food’ page should then link to a ‘pet health’ or specifically a ‘pet food’ page of the other site.

You cannot control how other sites link to you. A site that uses your logo as a link isn’t benefitting you much since search engines ignore images. A text link is generally more fruitful in drawing search engine attention.

One Website for All

A website that is accessible to all has a better chance of succeeding than one that is not. You can ensure accessibility of your site in two ways:

By customizing your site with tools and software that is readable across any and all computer platforms. Example: JavaScript and Flash are often not readable by computers; JavaScript where it has been disabled, and Flash where the software is not installed. It may be wise then to limit using both JavaScript and Flash on your site, or at least in the most important pages of your site.
By allowing visually impaired people to access information on your site. You will be surprised, there is a large population out there who fall in this category. Audio content can help tremendously to provide information as well as advertise your products to these specific group of visitors.

Code them Well

Well-coded websites, usually ones using a standard compliant code that is error-free and visible in all computer types (platforms), perform better. Well-coded sites are also easier for search engines to read.

Make sure your web designers perform validation of codes once they have been used on the site to ensure they are working properly.

Choosing the Right URL

A prudent choice of URL has significant impact on the performance of your website. Web designers are aware of this. However, if you are using a Content Management System to build your small business website, you must first understand why URLs are important to your website.

A URL is the address of your website. Search engines will look at this address and try to extract keywords from the URL. Example: if you have a website on Dogs and use a URL that says ‘pet.com’, you are generalizing. A ‘dog.com’ will have a much better chance of ranking because of the keyword ‘dog’.

Being specific through the use of keywords that best describe your website is the subtle, but assured technique to ensure search engine rankings. So, instead of just ‘dog.com’ you could specify further as ‘dog.com/obedience-training/training-collars.php’ to give search engines, and visitors, a better idea of what your site is.

You could also purchase a microsite to target a particular keyword phrase or set up a secondary website to specifically target that key-phrase.

To Style or Not to Style?

A nice website design does matter, but not for long. In the grand scheme of things, color-schemes and images are quickly dismissed by visitors in favor of specific information they come looking for. Hence, content and structure are more important.

So, when you ‘style’ your website, remember to maintain an organized structure and aesthetic placement of content and images. Avoid inverse text (darker background with light print) as it is difficult to read. Also, avoid writing in ALL CAPS; not only is it strainful to the eye but in web typography, it means you are screaming!

Testing for colorblind text is also recommended.

Pictures Say a 1000 Words!

At least on a website, images are the closest your customers will come to experiencing a product. Needless to say, images should be professionally scanned, edited and retouched to make them appear attractive to your customers.

That pretty much sums up the basic techniques to developing a good website and achieving online success. Your small business website will assuredly show results if you get the basics right at the start.

All the best!

Here I found an interesting Report about the new Adobe Project called “Rome”, from Joshua Johnson on an Article posted on “Design Shack“, a really awesome source for all Designers and Graphic Developers.
Take a look inside!

Adobe recently launched a project called Rome that is meant to be a sort of all-in-one content publishing platform. You can use this innovative application to build websites, print projects, interactive PDFs and more.

Today I’ll give you a super basic beginner’s introduction to Rome so you can see what it is, how to use it and whether or not it’s right for you.

Rome

In Adobe’s own words, Project Rome is “Simple, powerful, all-in-one content creation and publishing for virtually anyone.” If you think this is a little vague, you’re right. But then again, the entire project is a little puzzling. Is Rome the future of Photoshop? Is it competition for Dreamweaver or InDesign?

The answer is really “none of the above.” After playing with it a bit, it becomes obvious that Adobe is attempting to target a different market than with the Creative Suite. While CS is an incredibly expensive set of powerful, professional applications that can take years (decades?) to learn thoroughly, Rome is meant to be a user-friendly way for just about anyone to create rich content.

Before we get started, you’ll want to stop by the Rome website and either download the desktop application or launch the web app (I’ll be using the desktop version).

Hello there,
I found on a really interesting Post, about the main story at these days about Flash vs HTML5, on a really remarkable Blog, I mean “10steps“, and I have to say that, if you had one time in your life something developed with Flash, or anyway you had to use it, maybe now is the right moment to take part of this survey and give your opinion too,
because I thnik is important to notice how amazing Flash was and is, and how through his engine, everything becomes a huge help on the web development ’till today!
Don’t forget Flash, take the survey please.

Flash technology made a revolution in the Internet industry. It brought dynamism, interactivity and vividness to websites, providing users with an amazing invigorative experience. But nowadays under different unfavorable circumstances Flash becomes weaker, as people begin to think more critically of it.

That’s why TemplateMonster.com, considering itself to be an experienced player on the market of Flash technology, is conducting a Flash Survey and encourages everyone to participate. The survey is open not only for Flash developers, but also for web programmers, designers, non-technical users, etc. Every person’s opinion is important!

Hello again,
one of my favourite Site, where I like to spend most of the time reading, is absolutely “<a href="http://sixrevisions.com>Six Revisions“, which contains really great suggestions, Tutorials and more interesting stuff, like this Post, which I suggest you to read, for your Blog or networking in general.
Enjoy!

Twitter. It’s huge at the moment: As I’m writing this, I can hear the guy on the radio plugging his own Twitter account to his audience, asking them to follow him. Whether you’re using it for marketing or just personal use, Twitter can be very useful — and fun at the same time.

If you are a tweeter (apparently not everybody is), then it’s quite probable that you’ll want to get the most out of your experience. From Twitter clients that build on top of the default UI to finding people to follow and learning more about your Twitter activity, here is a review of a few excellent Twitter tools.

Hello again Folks,

after a year, this Blog growed from 0 to 150 visitors a Month, I know that’s nothing against Big Blogs like “Smashing Magazine” or “Mashable”, but I’m a little guy and everything have to start from a little point.

For my opinion, this result is a BIG result, simply because at the very first days, which I spent to experiment with wordpress, and to build this Blog, my wish was to create something like a Report about Photoshop and his power of variations and scopes, that could help someone to learn quickly how to use it, like I learned, or better I’m always learning.
I’m glad to present you the new face of Techdoom Reports, complete rebuilded and optimized.
This Time I add some more stuff, to show you some skills and, of course, my Site “Coolgio Design”.
I hope you’ll find many useful stuff on this Blog, like before, and I would like to thank all of you, that keep reading my Blog and News, all over the World.

With my Best Regards
Take care of you
